A grade two listed building, renovated by new owners Leigh and Catharine Spooner, the Grapes Inn re-opened on the 17th August 2012 bringing to an end the steady decline of the village local in Slingsby. A Yorkshire Post article beautifully describes the transformation process that took place.
You know when you walk into a place and every sense screams that you’ve stumbled across a classic in the making? Well that’s the Grapes Inn, Slingsby.
A heartbeat from Castle Howard, it is ridiculously pretty, and the jewel in its crown the graceful Georgian pub, recently spruced up and raring to go.
Landlords Catharine and Leigh Spooner moved back to the village (Catharine was brought up on a nearby farm) and they were disappointed that the local was so dismal – so when the chance came up, they bought it despite having no experience (unless you count market research, says Leigh) and two small children. Leigh’s background is in antiques and renovation and it’s come in a bit handy.
Several stone-floored rooms are full of lovely vintage furniture. The stunning over-mantle mirrors, burnished oak tables, leather armchairs – even the radiators – are period. Candles flicker, fresh flowers are dotted everywhere and the Spooners have a sense of humour too; a stuffed boar’s head hangs over the fire in the main bar. Oh, and somewhere (they’re not for telling you, you’ve got to find it) there’s a Mouseman chair.
Located on Railway street in picturesque Slingsby, the Grapes Inn is ideally located for tourists or walkers visiting Castle Howard, the coast, the North Yorkshire Moors or the local market towns and tourist attractions in the Ryedale area. The Grapes Inn is just a short walk from both of the caravan/camping sites located in Slingsby. Dogs are welcome. A Wi-Fi internet connection is available to customers.
